Nascut in Carolina de Sud pe 7 februarie 1966, Chris Rock a crescut in cartierul Brooklyn. Chris este cel mai mare din cei sapte copii ai familiei Rock. El are si un frate vitreg, din prima casatorie a tatalui sau, care a fost multa vreme inchis. Tatal lui Chris era sofer de camion.
Ca adolescent, vedeta visa sa devina actor de comedie. Visul lui parea sa devina realitate la varsta de optsprezece ani si tot atunci l-a cunoscut pe Eddie Murphy, care a fost foarte impresionat de talentul sau si apare alaturi de el in Beverly Hills Cop II (1987).
A facut reclame pentru 1-800 Collect si Nike. Locuieste inca in Brooklyn, New York.
