In aceasta zi a anului 1964, Sydney Poitier devine primul afro-american care a castigat Premiul Academiei americane de film pentru cel mai bun actor, pentru rolul sau de muncitor, care contribuie la construirea unei capele, in filmul Campul cu crini (1963). Poitier s-a nascut in 1924, fiind fiul unor fermieri saraci din Bahamas. A abandonat scoala la varsta de 13 ani, iar ulterior s-a inrolat in armata americana. Dupa perioada petrecuta in armata, a inceput sa fie interesat de teatru si s-a alaturat Teatrului american al negrilor, insa cariera sa a progresat lent, din cauza puternicului sau accent insular. A debutat pe Broadway in 1946 intr-o productie a piesei Lysistrata, avand o distributie formata exclusiv din persoane de culoare. Trei ani mai tarziu, si-a facut debutul in film, intr-un documentar al armatei americane, iar pana in 1950 aparea deja in filme produse la Hollywood. Poitier a devenit primul star de culoare faimos in America. Dintre filmele sale de succes amintim Rebelii (1958), pentru care a primit o nominalizare la Oscar, In arsita noptii (1967), si Ghici cine vine la cina (1967). Poitier a inceput sa regizeze la inceputul anilor ’70, cu filmul Buck si predicatorul (1971). In 1992, a primit premiul Institutului de film american pentru intreaga activitate, fiind primul actor si regizor de culoare care a fost onorat in acest fel.
