Biografie:
Charles Spencer Chaplin s-a nascut la Londra, pe 16 aprilie 1889. In 1908 s-a alaturat companiei teatrale a lui Fred Karno, din care facea parte si Stan Laurel. In 1912 trupa a plecat intr-un turneu in Statele Unite, iar Chaplin s-a decis sa ramana acolo. Dupa un an, producatorul Mack Sennett l-a luat la Keystone Studio, care se mandreau deja cu nume precum Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle, Mabel Normand, si Mack Swain. Dar Chaplin i-a surclasat pe acestia, reusind sa faca 35 de filme intr-un singur an.
Primul sau film a fost Making a Living (1914); insa urmatorul film, Kid Auto Races at Venice (1914), avea sa-i schimbe intreaga cariera. In aceasta pelicula purta pantaloni largi imprumutati de la Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle, niste pantofi imensi de-ai lui Ford Sterling, o jacheta minuscula, o palarie melon si o mustata de marimea unei periute de dinti.
Incepand cu 1915, Chaplin a scris, regizat, produs si, desigur, jucat in toate filmele sale. S-a alaturat companiei Essanay Company, iar in 1917 erau lansate The Immigrant (1917) si Easy Street (1917). In 1918, impreuna cu fratele sau, isi deschideau propriul lor studio in Los Angeles, iar in 1919 se asociau cu Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford si D.W. Griffith si formau United Artists, pentru a-si produce propriile filme. Dar primul film facut de catre Chaplin la aceasta companie a fost A Woman of Paris (1923). Au urmat The Gold Rush (1925) si The Circus (1928), pentru care a primit un Oscar. In 1931 lansa City Lights, iar urmatorul sau film a fost was Modern Times (1936), care s-a dovedit a fi unul dintre cele mai mari succese ale sale. Filmul The Great Dictator (1940), acuza regimul nazist. Chaplin interpreta un rol dublu, fiind u barbier evreu ce luptase in primul razboi mondial si maleficul Adenoid Hynkel, dictatorul Tomaniei.
In 1945 a inceput sa lucreze la Monsieur Verdoux (1947), iar in 1952 lansa cel mai bun film sonor al sau, Limelight in care juca si bunul sau prieten, Buster Keaton. In acelasi an, s-a trezit tarat in isteria anti-comunista ce pusese stapanire pe SUA, fiind acuzat de autoritati ca ar avea tendinte comuniste. Scandalizat si deprimat, Chaplin a parasit Statele Unite, plecand in Elvetia. In timpul sederii sale in Europa, a mai facut doua filme: A King in New York (1957), lansat in America cu 20 de ani mai tarziu si ultima sa pelicula, A Countess from Hong Kong (1967), ce-i avea in distributie pe Marlon Brando si Sophia Loren. Ironic, acesta a fost si singurul insucces al lui Chaplin.
In 1969, Chaplin a inceput sa lucreze la alte filme, printre care si "The Kid" si "The Circus". Avea de gand sa faca si un film numit "The Freak" cu fiica sa Victoria Chaplin in rolul principal, in care ea sa poarte aripile pe care el insusi le purtase cu 50 de ani in urma in The Kid. Dar, pe atunci Chaplin avea deja 80 de ani si s-a retras sa locuiasca in Vevey, Elvetia.
In 1975 a fost numit Cavaler de catre Regina. A murit in somn, in noaptea de Craciun a anului 1977.
