Fiu de politist din Brooklyn, decedat pe cand el avea doar opt ani, vedeta de comedie Eddie Murphy a fost crescut in clasa mijlocie din Hempstead de mama sa si de tatal vitreg. Fiind un "clovn" innascut, in timpul liceului, la Roosevelt Jr-Sr, a fost votat cel mai popular elev.
Murphy avea 19 ani cand a fost angajat ca actor de rezerva intr-o comedie difuzata la NBC, Saturday Night Live. Cand parea ca nu va deveni mai popular, Murphy a fost distribuit in comedia/melodrama 48 Hours si astfel, un star, de opt milioane USD pentru film, se nascuse.
Actorul isi urmeaza triumful cinematografic cu Trading Places, realizat in 1983, in acelasi an in care albumul sau de comedie "Eddie Murphy, Comedian" a castigat un premiu Grammy. In 1984 era in sfarsit autorizat sa aiba un film al sau: Beverly Hills Cop, unul dintre cele mai celebre filme ale deceniului.
Trecand in noul mileniu, Murphy realizeaza Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (2000) iar in anul 2001 Dr. Dolittle 2. In acelasi an, avea sa-si foloseasca vocea intr-un film animat, unde avea sa fie magarul din seria de filme Shrek.
Premii: Un premiu Golden Globe, o nominalizare la Oscar.
