Desi a devenit cunoscuta in 1980 Kathleen Turner, este posesoarea unui amestec inte sexualitate, frumustete si inteligenta, precum sirenele din epoca de aur a filmului Lana Turner si Ava Gardner. Dupa ani de munca ca necunoscuta pe drumul spre productiile de pe Broadway si in serialul pentru televiziune The Doctors, Turner avea sa patrunda in lumea filmului fiind distribuita in rolul Matty alaturi de William Hur in filmul lui Lawrence Kasdan thriller-ul Body Heat (1981). A continuat sa joace de-a lungul decadei, aparand intr-o varietate de filme populare de la drama la aventura si comedie.
La sfarsitul anilor '90, Turner a inceput sa lucreze la o categorie de filme de calitate precum Moonlight and Valentino (1995) si The Real Blonde (1997). In 1999, poate fi vazuta jucand in comediile pentru copii Baby Geniuses, The Prince of Central Park, si in The Virgin Suicides, in care a fost distribuita ca matriarh al unei familii disfunctionale.
