Biografie: De la o varsta frageda s-a mutat cu parintii din Topeka in California, unde a si crescut. A absolvit universitatea San Francisco dupa care a inceput sa ia cursuri la American Conservatory Theatre (tot din San Francisco). Urmatorul pas in cariera sa a fost sa se mute in New York unde a avut cateva roluri pe scena dupa care a inceput sa joace si in filme. Cariera ei a luat o intorsatura spre bine odata cu producerea filmului The Grifters (1990) (alaturi de Anjelica Huston si John Cusack, in regia lui Stephen Frears) care a avut parte de o critica foarte favorabila. Apoi i s-a oferit rolul Virginiei Hill, actrita cea focoasa a lui Bugsy Siegel, din partea lui Warren Beatty, impreuna cu care Anette Bening s-a casatorit in 1992. Interpretari exceptionale a avut in filmul American Beauty si in ecranizarea romanului cu acelasi nume Being Julia, ambele fiind incununate cu nominalizari la Premiul Oscar.
